01In short

  • We keep your account details, your credits and technical metadata about your AI requests.
  • We do not store your questions, the text, screenshots or attached images you send, or the AI answers.
  • Your chat history stays in your browser, on your device.
  • We never sell your data and never use it for advertising.

02Data we collect

Account

Your name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), email verification status and account creation date. These are needed to create and secure your account (performance of the contract).

Session

When you sign in, a session cookie keeps you connected on the website and lets the extension use your account. It is strictly necessary and expires automatically.

Credits and subscription

Your credit balances and their history (welcome credits, monthly credits, adjustments), your plan, subscription status and renewal dates. Payment card details are handled by Stripe and never reach our servers.

AI request metadata

For each AI request: date and time, request type, model, status, credit source used and token counts. This is used to debit and refund credits, apply the hourly and daily limits and prevent abuse (performance of the contract and legitimate interest).

Contact messages

When you use the contact form, your name, email, subject and message are sent by email to our support inbox. They are not stored in our database.

03Content sent from the extension

While you are signed in and the side panel is open, the extension checks locally whether a selection exists in the current tab so it can enable the Highlight button. Only a presence signal is returned to the panel; this check does not send page content to our server. Clicking Highlight adds the selected text to your draft. Screenshots and images you attach from your computer are also prepared locally.

When you press Enter or click Send, the extension transmits the content needed to answer: your message and any selected text, screenshots or attached images in the draft, with relevant earlier messages from the current conversation. You can also send an image or selected text without typing a question. Our server forwards this content to the AI provider to generate the answer and returns the answer to the extension.

Explain Snap does not keep this content: questions, selected text, screenshots, attached images and answers are not stored on our servers. Only the metadata described above is recorded.

Your chat history is saved locally in your browser storage, linked to your account, so you can find your conversations again. You can turn history off or clear it from the extension settings, and removing the extension deletes it.

Selection observation is limited to the current tab while the signed-in panel is open; it stops when the panel closes or moves to another tab. The extension does not monitor inactive tabs or track your browsing history.

04Chrome Web Store Limited Use

The use of information received from the Explain Snap extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In particular:

  • data is used only to provide the features you ask for;
  • data is never sold or transferred to third parties, except to the service providers listed below to run the service, or when required by law;
  • data is never used for advertising, including personalized advertising;
  • data is never used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes;
  • no human reads your content, unless you send it to us yourself for support or the law requires it.

05Cookies and analytics

The website uses a session cookie, strictly necessary for signing in. When it is enabled, Google Analytics measures visits to the website (pages viewed, approximate location, device type) to help us improve it.

Google Analytics is used on the website only. The extension contains no analytics or tracking.

06Service providers

We share data only with the providers needed to run Explain Snap, each bound by data processing terms:

OVH (France)
Hosting of the website, the API and the database.
AI provider (OpenAI)
Generates answers from the content you send. Content is processed to produce the answer, not to train models through the API.
Stripe
Subscription payments, invoices and payment methods.
Brevo
Sending account emails (such as email verification) and support messages.
Google Analytics
Website audience measurement, website only.

Some providers may process data outside the European Union. These transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision.

07How long we keep data

  • Account, credits and request metadata: as long as your account exists. They are deleted within 30 days after your account is deleted.
  • Session cookie: until you sign out or the session expires.
  • Billing records: kept by Stripe and by us for the period required by accounting law (up to 10 years).
  • Contact messages: for the time needed to handle your request, and at most 3 years after our last exchange.
  • Addresses that bounced: kept on a suppression list so that we stop sending emails to them.
  • Chat history: on your device only, until you clear it or remove the extension.

08Your rights

Under the GDPR and French law, you can access, correct and delete your data, object to or restrict its processing, receive a copy of it (portability) and give instructions about what happens to it after your death.

To exercise these rights, or to delete your account, write to contact@explainsnap.com or use the contact form with the subject “Account or data deletion”, from the email address of your account. We answer within one month at the latest.

If you believe your rights are not respected, you can lodge a complaint with the CNIL (cnil.fr), the French data protection authority.

09Security

Connections use HTTPS, passwords are hashed, secrets are encrypted and access to the administration is restricted. No system is perfectly secure: we will inform you and the authorities of any data breach as required by law.

10Children

Explain Snap is not intended for children under 15. If you are under 15, you need the permission of a parent or guardian to create an account.

11Changes to this policy

We will update this page if our practices change, and tell signed-in users by email or in the extension about any significant change before it applies.
